Facemasks are somewhat of a regular occurrence for me. I look at the process of using a facemask as the start to a quick 20-minute spa session where I can be alone with my own thoughts and reflect on my day. Pampering yourself at home can be just as therapeutic as a $300 spa day, and only end up costing you a fraction of the price. Keep reading to learn about my top 4 favourite face masks, what each of them does for my skin, and how to use them.
Incorporating facemasks into your skincare routine is necessary if you want to achieve skin that appears renewed and refreshed. Since facemasks are not something that you need to use everyday, everyone should be able to find the time to take at least 20 minutes once a week and let your skin soak in all the glory that facemasks provide! Facemasks are jammed packed with nutrients, hydrating properties, essential vitamins and minerals, and so much more that will do nothing but good for your complexion. I have so much fun playing around with facemask because each once is formulated in a different way, giving my skin different treatments depending on its state.
MY TOP 4
I have 4 top all-time favourite facemasks that I rotate between depending on whether my pores need a deep cleaning, a gulp of hydration, or anything in between.
1. BOSCIA – Luminizing Black Mask ($42.00 at Sephora.com)
This mask is a “peel-off” mask, meaning that once it dries completely to the skin you can grab a corner and completely peel it off your face. This allows the product to dry onto any leftover makeup, bacteria, or environmental toxins that are clogged in your pores. It clings to these things and pulls them right out of the pore as you peel the mask back. I love this mask so much because I can actually see the toxins stuck on the mask once I remove it. As gross as it is, that’s what ensures me that it actually works. This mask is good for combination skin, or anyone who needs a good cleanse. After this mask my face feels soft and smooth.
2. GLAMGLOW – FLASHMUD Brightening Treatment ($79.00 at Sephora.com)
Although this mask is on the pricier side, it is my all time favourite brightening facemask. I received it as a graduation present from my Dad (yes, I chose a face mask as a graduation gift) and it has been my most luxurious and adored facemask ever since. I find that one of the main things I strive for in my skin is brightness and luminosity. This mask is infused with white birch leaf, which instantly brightens my face and makes it radiant. It makes dull skin looked regenerated and it smells AMAZING. If you really want to treat yourself with a mask that will last forever, I highly recommend. I received this product a year ago and I still have ¾ of the product left.
3. ERBORIAN – Bamboo Waterlock Mask ($54.00 at Sephora.com)
I’ve been on the hunt for quite some time on a product that would hydrate my skin without it feeling greasy. After testing many different products and experimenting with different brands I came across this hydrating facemask. This is a mask where I feel hydrated and soothed without feel like I just rubbed oil all over my face. Since I struggle with dry skin I need all the help that I can get, but sometimes facemask that leave a greasy residue are just impractical. I love to use this facemask 10 minutes before I apply my makeup as it preps my skin and leaves a smooth and fresh base. My makeup glides on so easily after using this and keeps it looking bright & healthy. When I use this I don’t have to worry about my skin flaking and separating under my makeup. Definitely a must have for those, like me with dry skin.
4. ARBONNE – Cellular Renewal Masque ($67.00 from ARBONNE Retailers)
This mask is one that I don’t use that often due to its extreme intensity. I use it maybe 1-2 times a month and that’s all my skin needs to see and feel its effects, although the packaging does recommend 1-2 a week. That being said, I do have sensitive skin so I find overuse of this product irritating. This mask is replenishing any dead skin cells and renewing the formation of new skin cells. I can’t keep this mask on for more than 5 minutes because I begin to feel a slight tingling sensation. When I start to feel that I know its time to rinse my face. INSTANTLY, my skin feels brand-new. It’s soft and glowy and so smooth! I love this mask so much, but I do recommended limited use of it.
HOW TO USE
I like to use a facemask at night before I put my skin care on and go to sleep, or before I apply makeup if I find I have a little extra time to spare. Once I have cleansed my face and gotten any residue from the day off I immediately follow with a toner. I like to use a toner before applying a facemask because it preps my skin for the process and puts my PH balance into check. This will ensure the best of results. I then apply the facemask with a clean and sanitized foundation brush. I do this because it makes it easier to apply the mask and allows me to aim clear of my hairline. There is nothing worse than getting a sticky facemask in your hair. I also like to use a brush because its more sanitary than applying it with my hands. Once the allotted time stated on the packaging has passed I begin to rinse the mask. I like to use a damp washcloth at the end to make sure I get off any excess residue that may be lingering on the face. Finally I follow with my normal skincare routine and feel renewed and refreshed!
Personally, I try to use facemask as often as I can. My schedule can get pretty busy and time can creep up on me quick, so I don’t go more than a week without some form of facemask pampering. Although these are my top 4, I try to rotate through my collection and choose the facemask that is most appropriate for my skin at the time. I would say that if you were going to incorporate a facemask into your routine more often than just once a week, try to lean towards hydrating masks. Deep cleaning and pore masks are great, but these are a lot more intense, therefore don’t want to be used too often. There is such thing as “too much of a good thing” and you don’t want irritations and sensitivities to arise.
I hope you found this helpful in your skincare routine and I hope it gives a little extra radiance to your skin!
Stay happy & healthy,
