When it comes to perfecting complexion, the step of most importance in the skin care process is the use of serums and facial oils. Many tend to shy away from these products, just as I did years ago, but the secret to healthy skin is hidden within these treasures. It may seem counter-intuitive to apply oil and concentrates to your skin, as most people want to reduce the amount of oil on their face, but the addition of these products to your skin care routine will do nothing but fight blemishes and harvest hydration and nutrition. Take a few minutes to learn about the nourishing properties of serums and facial oils and my favourites that I use to pamper and heal my skin!
What are serums and what do they do?
Facial serums are similar in a way to facial creams and moisturizers, except they have a greater focus on the rate of absorption and the heaviness upon your skin. Similar to how most facial creams strive for moisture and hydration, serums aim for the same effects while also trying to maintain a lightweight feel. Since facial serums are so light and thin they tend to be very fast absorbing when on the face, so the skin will be receiving the nutrients from the serum almost automatically. Within minutes you can transform dull skin into a complexion of radiance and glow with the use of a facial serum. The lightweight formula and the instant effects facial serums provide allow for the fear of an oily residue to be forgotten! Residue left on the face is not an issue to be concerned with, allowing you to prepare yourself for a perfect makeup base or even the addition of facial moisturizer for that extra hint of hydration! Serums are going to preserve the youth of your skin, fight the effects of aging and give your skin the nourishment it needs to illuminate.
Facial Oils: What do they do and how are they different from facial serums?
When it comes to facial oils, it can be a bit confusing on how they are all that different from facial serums. Believe me, once upon a time before I was as invested in the care of my skin as I am now, I use to think that facial oil was a fancy name for facial serums. I was convinced that companies created these products as a gimmick to get consumers to buy more of their products that are unnecessary for the skin care process! Little did I know I was completely wrong in this thought process, and now today I cannot live without both my facial serums and my facial oils!
Facial oils are an extremely high concentration of specific nutrients. Since the concentration is so high in facial oils it creates a purer unit of the nutrient, which allows us to get a high quality ingredient to apply to our face. This means that the more pure the product the fewer amount of fillers, parabens, and synthetic ingredients will be present! In turn, facial oils provide our face with nourishment in its most natural form, which is great for sensitivities and the avoidance of irritation.
Since facial oils (whether it be argan, coconut, jojoba, aloe, etc.) are directing their efforts towards purity, the effects of hydration are not present. Since it is oil-based, water and oil would have a counteracting effect. The separating properties of oil and water together would stunt the flow of nutrients to the skin and complete nourishment would not be achieved. Instead of focusing on hydration, which most skin care products tend to do, facial oils strive for protection and nourishment. All skin types need antioxidants in order to remain plump, healthy, and strong. The purity of facial oils add a defense system to the skin and provide natural forms of nutrients that calm down any sensitive or irritated areas of the skin.
I know many people are fearful that adding oil to skin that is already struggling with excess oil and blemishes would just make matters worse. Oily skin is usually a result of ones PH being unbalanced. Usually when the PH balance is off, the body will try to compensate for this and in turn tend produce more oil than what is actually needed. When the balance is off, the body tends to produce oil (sebum) to push out any toxins within the body that may be creating the skin to be unbalanced, therefore resulting in a blemished exterior. By adding oil to the face, this will give the body a notice that enough oil is present and therefore it will stop producing an excess amount! The essential fatty acids found in pure oil will plump the skin and begin to bring the PH back to a normal balance. The skin and body are fascinating and its so interesting to learn how much our body can do to try to protect us, but just like we do in every day life, our bodies can sometimes get confused, so a little help from facial oils can’t hurt!
How To Apply
Since both facial serums and facial oils are so pure and the effects are extremely intense I don’t want to overuse them. A little bit goes a long way and overuse of these products can cause your skin to build an immunity to them, which in turn would limit you from receiving the full effects they provide. After much trial and error over the past few years I have devised a process in the use of these products that works well for me. During my daytime skin care routine I incorporate a facial serum and then I incorporate facial oil during my nighttime skin care routine. If my skin is acting up I may add a facial serum at night, but I rarely ever add an oil to my skin during the day! This is because facial oils when reacting with water-based ingredients can have an effect similar to vinegar and olive oil. When they are added together they tend to repel away from one another, creating an uneven formula. If I were to apply makeup to my skin after my daytime routine with facial oil, a similar situation may occur. My makeup may separate from the oil that was applied to my face and everything may appear runny and uneven. Definitely not attractive!
How To Apply Facial Serums
After my face has been cleansed, toned, and eye cream has been applied I go in with my favourite facial serum. I take 2-3 small drops, warm the formula up between my fingers, and then apply along my entire face. I also bring excess of the product gently down my neck, being sure not to pull harshly. Once this has been applied I lightly tap the serum in until I feel that there is even coverage. I then follow with moisturizer.
How To Apply Facial Oils
Similar to how facial serums are applied, the process is very alike, except for the fact that it is done at night before bed. Again, after my face has been cleansed, toned, and eye cream has been applied I go in with my facial oil of choice. I take only a small amount of the product. One small drop is all that is needed since the ingredient is so pure. Maybe one and a half drops for nights where my skin needs a little bit of extra pampering. Once the oil has been absorbed evenly into my face with gentle tapping motions I add my nighttime moisturizer. If you are having trouble evenly applying the oil, add it right into your moisturizer and then apply both of them together! If I were to add a facial serum at night I would apply it just before the facial oil.
My Favourite Facial Serums
Hands down my number 1 favourite facial serum is the Caudalie Anti-Wrinkle Defense Serum. I know that this serum is designed to help youthful skin fight off wrinkles and fine lines, but the real reason I tend to keep going back to this product is for the transformation it does to my skin on a daily basis. This product instantly removed redness from my complexion and helped to even out any skin discolorations and irritations. My skin instantly felt brighter, healthier, and unbelievably hydrated after one use. I swear by this serum.
I have gone through a few bottles of this product now and I am never disappointed with its effects. About a month ago I ran out of my bottle and I decided to try out some new products. Over the holidays I noticed my skin breaking out and getting bumpy rashes all over my chin and cheeks. I knew that over the holidays I wasn’t eating the best with all the family gatherings and Christmas treats, but that still didn’t make sense as to why my skin was so irritated. After a few days struggling with my skin I realized that I had stopped using this product. I immediately went to Sephora and purchased another bottle and the next day my skin was COMPLETLEY back to normal. I am still amazed how my skin cleared up instantly overnight from the use of this product. I will never go back to anything else!
The Caudalie Anti-Wrinkle Defense Serum has a lot of great properties within its formulation to help you achieve great skin. Judging by the name, we know that it fights against fine lines and wrinkles, but it is also known for its fast-absorbing formula and light weight feel, and I should mention it smells really good! It’s made with grape seed polyphenol and vitamin C, and when combined together it helps to block 100% of free radicals and daily toxins. There is also an olive complex within this product that helps to hydrate and leave skin moisturized!
If you don’t have a serum in your skin care routine I definitely recommend this product no matter what type of skin you have. If you’re nervous to add something to your sensitive skin and looking for a cheaper alternative just to try out, I recommend The Face Shop Mango Seed Radiance Essence. I have also been through quite a few bottles of this product. It does work really well and keeps my face hydrated, but if I can get a product that does all that PLUS fight against aging, I tend to lean towards the Caudalie!
My Favourite Facial Oils
Unlike my commitment to my Caudalie facial serum, when it comes to facial oils I tend to be a little bit more flexible in changing up which ones I apply to my face. Depending on what I find my skin is need of at the particular time will base the decision of the oil I reach towards! Currently, my favourite facial oil has been the Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil. The name of the product really says it all. The pureness of this oil ensures that no preservatives and fillers are added to this product, which in turn gives your skin the proper nutrients it needs and deserves.
I’ve done quite a lot of research on Argan Oil and how it is extracted to get such a pure form. I learned that the trees in which the Argan Fruit grows on is only accessed in South Western Morocco. It takes 14 years for the fruit to fully form on the tree, so the process is extremely precise and time-consuming. Once the fruit are ripe and harvested the outer layer is removed. Removing this outer layer reveals the argan nut! The nut is crushed until it becomes a creamy paste. This paste is then hand-crushed once again until it changes to a flour/powder form. Once the argan takes this form it is mixed by hand which slowly begins to release the oil! This oil is then cold-pressed and transferred directly into the Josie Maran packaging. The story of how this oil is obtained is so pure and strenuous it has made me love this product even more than I already do!
Another great option for facial oil is Jojoba Oil. This is a product I like to incorporate into my skin care routine about once a week in place of my Josie Maran Argan Oil. I find that this oil is a lot more intense when placed on my skin so the benefits carry for a few days, meaning I don’t want to over use it! Jojoba Oil is made up of an array of natural waxes and fatty acids. These ingredients nourish the skin and carry with them a brightening and smoothing effect to the skin! It imitates the natural oils found in your face, but I would definitely recommend working yourself up to this product. I would start with an extremely small amount and as your skin becomes more accustomed to it, add more to your skin care routine. You can purchase this product at any local health food store!

I think that just about wraps it up on what I have to say about facial serums and oils! I’ve tried countless amounts of these products and could write 5 more pages on all the different kinds, but I think that’s enough for now. I hope this has inspired you to add a little extra pampering to your skin to radiate your inner beauty on the outside!
